"My gelding was diagnosed at 18 with Cushings (96)acth level. He will be 21 this Spring. Until 2 months ago, he was on 1.5 compounded pergolide with levels still in 60s range. He stopped eating the compounded and was loosing weight. I see a difference for the better in his energy level and his appetite has improved now with Prasend because its FDA regulated and in a few months will have Cornell test him again. I am hopeful that 1mg will be enough. I think I was wasting money with the compounded, not consistant. He also has Moderate COPD so needs his immune system strong. I board so I take a apple wafer and make a hole in it and push it in tight so its in his med bag which is added 1x day to his grain bucket and it can not fall out because Joe likes to knee his bucket while he eats I do not want to lose it in stall. I have been told that Prascend can lose effectiveness by my vet if out of packet for days??? I make up 4 med bags at a time just in case and they r kept in a cool place."

"My mare had been on 2.5 mg of pergolide syrup and seems to be doing just as well on 1 mg of Pracend. It's super easy to give. I taught the mare to like bananas which took about a week of offering one every day before she would even try it, (she's a super finicky thoroughbred). Now she LOVES bananas and I slip the Pracend in a piece of banana. She thinks she's getting a treat everyday!"

"My 23 yo Irish Sport Horse has been on 1mg SID Prascend for nearly 3 months. There has been a marked improvement in his energy level and a noticeable change in his topline. Time will tell with regard to how his coat will change. ACTH level post Prascend will be taken in another few months. This horse was in thin body condition and therefore did not necessarily present as a full-blown PPID case; however initial endogenous ACTH was 83 pg/dl. Beware of the "pergolide veil" as any dopamine agonist will have massive systemic effects. My horse was not inappetent but did seem lethargic for the first week. He stopped eating any bran or treats for the first month but did eat his hay and equine senior without problem. I switched from AM medication to PM medication which seemed to resolve some of the pickiness. He resumed eating treats about 1 month into treatment. Pictures below were when I first bought him and 6 months after purchase, 3 months after starting Prascend."

"I have a 28 yr old Arab gelding who has been on compounded Pergolide from a local vet AND Smartpak since Oct 2010. Despite the medication and other efforts to control the disease, he remained shaggy, thin, poorly muscled and depressed. I started him on Prascend in May 2012, and he is a completely different horse. He shed out slick this summer, and he acts and looks like a youngster now. He is a completely different horse. I will continue to keep him on Prascend, even though it does cost a bit more. The cost is outweighed by the results, and the ease of storage and dosing. The pill is tiny and very "dry". I dose my gelding by simply sticking the pill inside his cheek with my index finger. It sticks to his moist skin, and he has yet to spit it back out! He has no molars at all, so I cannot hide the pill in a treat/carrot/apple."

"I am thrilled this product became available. I used the liquid compounded Pergolide for over 10 years and my horse needed 6ml per day at a cost of $300 per month because the compound was apparently very weak and inconsistent. With Prascend, the cost is $70 per month, an incredible savings. Also, the compounded Pergolide deteriorated quickly so could not be ordered until the last minute, resulting in sometimes being out of supply for this very necessary drug, and it had to be refrigerated, also difficult to do in a barn and when being shipped."

"our vet recommended Prascend for our mare with Cushings. I am seeing reduction in her crest on her neck and other places that fat accumulates with cushings. I've seen no negative side effects. We are still early in her treatment."

"Very hard to judge if it is better than compounded Pergolide. Prascend only comes in 1mg. dosage. Extremely costly when a horse needs more than 1mg. per day as my mare does. Very convenient to give the tablet form."

"Our 24 year old was on compounded pergolide for several years. Despite the compounded pergolide, he was shaggy and a little thin. One month after starting Prascend, he has a short, normal coat. I hide the Prascend in the middle of a piece of hollowed out carrot. So far, he eats it eagerly. He has gained a little weight and looks great. One of our neighbors asked if we bought a new horse! I hope the benefits continue."

"The tablet is very small - especially for a horse size dosage. Its a little smaller than the size of a pencil eraser and can be hidden in a carrot with no trouble. The old mare that receives it is like a drug sniffing airport dog when it comes to medication! She never even notices it and that makes me feel great because I know she is getting the full dosage every time."

"In response to the previous review and most likely many complaints, it is important to remember that this version of Pergolide, being regulated, will actually have in it the correct mg dosage. It has been found with compounded Pergolide that they almost never have the claimed strengths in them - some as low as 60% strength! Compounded Pergolide also degrades over time and, at the end of its short shelf life, can have as little as 40% of the label strength. Prascend, while more costly, will actually give your horse the correct dosage throughout its 2 year shelf-life. On converting to Prascend from compounded, some horses have become lethargic or inappetant because the dose is too high compared to the inconsistent compounded pergolide. In the end, you may save a few $$ by having your horse on the right dose and it will be better for them to be correctly regulated, not fluctuating with degrading compounded pergolide. It has been wonderful to have compounded around but thankfully we now have a consistent Pergolide treatment for our Cushings horses!"

"Disappointed that this product is being regulated to replace Pergolide. Pergolide has worked well for my 2 Cushings horses at half the cost of Prascend. If it is too expensive, people will euthanize their horses rather than pay this much for their old, unrideable horses. Not a reflection on SmartPak in any way."
