"I usually like Mountain Horse gear. I ordered this coat because I wanted something longer to wear at the barn on cold days, and when I was working but not riding. I also hoped that it would accommodate layers. But it seems the sizing runs small. Definitely NOT useful for layers underneath, a very snug fit through the body of the coat. And it also has a bit of a flare at the bottom, not very flattering. It did have some nice features, like magnetic snaps on the wind flap that covers the zipper. Thanks to SmartPak's excellent return policy, this item was returned."

"This is the warmest riding coat imaginable and it has amazing attention to detail. MH thought of everything to make this coat fashionable and functional. It is super comfortable to ride in, teach in, and do chores in. I really want a second one to keep clean and wear in my everyday (non-horse) life because I love the coat so much! It is one of the best horse purchased I have made!"

"This coat is so warm and has beautiful attention to detail. I was surprised by how well-made it was, and it's by far my favorite coat now. I think I need a second one, since I always want to wear this coat, both around town and in the barn. It is so comfortable and warm. I love it!"

"The Mountain Horse Regal coat is everything that was described and more. It is well fitting and warm. I thought I would not get to use it until next season but the week it arrived another cold front came and I was able to wear it when practicing. The double zipper is great as you can raise it up some to get on the saddle but keep the bulk of the coat closed to stay warm. This is a coat you really can ride in and look good in."

"This coat is not only lovely, but warm and soft and cozy. The color is stunning, and the hood stays put with no help. Only negative is that the zipper is VERY tough to get going, but once going, it seems to be a quality zipper. It seems to run a bit small, but just getting the next size up was fine. I like that it is a mix of country casual and street sweet in looks. Very nice coat over all."

"I'm glad I finally bought this coat (and on sale for a great price!). I bought the dark navy colored coat. Thus far, I have used it as a commuter coat in Boston, where the wind really kicks in the city, and as a barn jacket in Steamboat Springs, CO, during the middle of winter when the weather was in the teens and twenties, in an uninsulated barn.
Here are the coat's great qualities:
~there is a recessed wrist band, so you can wear gloves and don't have any draft up the sleeve.
~There is a magnet on the back which allows the jacket to split apart-presumably allowing you to get in a saddle easier. The zipper also is a double zipper, so you can have more "leg" room
~The zipper area is double-lined, so again, like at the wrists, there is no way to have a draft come through.
~The collar stands up tall, so there is no need to have a scarf. It's nice not to have to wear every piece of outdoor clothing I own when I go out to get dirty!
~The hood detaches, which is nice when the weather is a bit warmer
~I was HOT working inside an uninsulated barn when the weather was in the low twenties wearing this coat (with some quality layers). I was also pretty warm shoveling in it the other day after the Boston blizzard. Again, I was wearing a quality fleece and shirt underneath. I am comfortable sitting around outside in the cold and wind wearing the coat.
~The coat is fairly water-resistant. I have been rained on wearing it. The outer layer repelled the water at first, then seemed to absorb it some but still remained very warm.
~It is quite long, so even if I am wearing leggings in the house and want to run out in the cold, I am comfortable.
~the yellow/gold and leather detailing on it looks classy. There is a large "Mountain Horse" insignia on the neck, but it is only visible if you take the hood off. It is in cursive, so it's a bit difficult to tell what it says for most people, I think.
I only wish that the material was a little more rip-resistant. I rubbed against a piece of metal sticking out from a doorway and it caused a little tear.
Also, it runs a bit large. I measure slightly under 36" with clothes on around my bust. The chart says I should buy a medium (I usually buy smalls, regardless). Because I wanted a coat to wear out to do chores and possibly ride in with layers, I figured even if it was a bit big, it wouldn't matter. I have a few inches of space around my chest to spare with a sweater or fleece on. The only bad thing about the extra room is that the coat isn't as fitted and therefore isn't as "cute" as it would be if I ordered a small, I think. It also has a bit of a trumpet shape, which, again, may be cuter if I had ordered a smaller size.
The hood doesn't tighten very well, so it's not great when the wind is really kicking. I am interested to know if it will stay on over a helmet (haven't tried yet).
Great coat! I hope MH keeps making it and SP keeps carrying it."

"I bought this coat on sale and have not regretted it in the least, it fits perfectly, amazingly warm (I received it just as the weather in the north east hit sub zero temps) I only had a long sleeved shirt on underneath and I was toasty while walking my dog and doing barn chores. The extended collar is just right, not too snug, I have used it a lot, and the hood has tabs to make it fit snug when the weather is windy. Perfect for Nor easters like Nemo!! It is also very stylish and I have received many compliments from non-horse owners. I have yet to wash this coat, it did come with a tennis ball for drying. I have never had a problem with Mountain Horse products and I recommend you try it, you won't regret it."

"I wore it today. It was awesome. Warm enough for cold weather, but I wore it today in 50 degrees and I wasn't hot!! And it covers my legs and butt. The hood zips up and really cover your head and face if you need it. I like the magnet strip that hold back together. Plus, it is nice enough to wear out when I am not riding. It's a good crossover coat. It seems to be more durable than it appears. The fit is perfect. If you are typically a small, then order a small. Very roomy and comfortable but appears tailored."

"This is a very warm winter coat for the barn (I think it's too bulky and warm for riding). I love the length, the collar and the cuffs inside the sleeves. There is just one design flaw. Well, two. The first is that the cell phone pocket on the inside is placed too low on the body. It's right at your waist which is uncomfortable when you bed over. Which leads to the other design flaw. That is, the cell phone pocket really should be a zipper pocket on OUTSIDE of the coat over the left breast. Then you could get at it without unzipping the jacket. Other than that, I love this coat!"

"This is my new go-to coat around the barn, and it's stylish enough to wear out shopping! I'm 5'7", 132 lbs and ordered the medium. Probably could have gotten away with the small, but wanted to be able to wear a sweatshirt underneath. Mission accomplished. That said, I wore it to the barn the other day when the temp was 34 degrees with only a t-shirt underneath, which was totally adequate -and I'm ALWAYS cold! I think one of the biggest mistakes is to wear too many layers under a down coat. As many reviewers have mentioned it is a somewhat bell shaped and if you're a little insecure about that part of your body it could be a deal breaker. I for one am willing to sacrifice a little for staying warm though. Best feature? The magnetic snap in the back which AUTOMATICALLY opens and closes depending on your activity."

"by nature Mountain Horse does sell a lot of horse products - would typically say they are a little challenged with their zipper/snap type quality and this coat fits that template ... did want a down coat though and for the sale price this fits that bill quite well (it is not a deep fill though, but guessing I would expect to pay more for that anyway)"

"This coat caught my eye because of the high collar since I really don't like my neck to be cold. So far it keeps my neck toasty warm w/o a scarf. And it also helps keep my thighs covered since it comes down to just above the knee. The picture shows the length shorter than what it is on me. I don’t have super long legs. Great coat for walking the dogs."

"I usually don't buy things without trying them on first but I lucked out with this coat. It fits beautifully - I'm usually a size 10 - and looks fantastic. It gives me a slim line and is very flattering. The back vent has a little magnetic snap that opens when you sit in the saddle and snaps back when you are walking around. It is super warm and wind proof. I'm always cold, and this coat makes me feel like I'm walking around in a slim, tailored, stylish but snuggly warm down sleeping bag (I have also worn it around the house when my husband insists on turning down the thermostat...). The hood is nice to have also and it detaches when you don't need it. The coat is washable."
