Customer Reviews for Salt

Salt

Since hay and grain are both low-sodium foods, horses that won't use a salt block need an additional source of salt just to meet their daily needs. Also, replenishing the salt lost when sweating during warm months or heavy exercise is critical! Plain salt is ideal if your horse is on an otherwise well-balanced diet that supplies his other mineral and electrolyte needs, or if your horse has HYPP and can't be given typical electrolytes because of their potassium content.

"My horse has never drank enough water, even in summer. The salt gets her to drink more water now, even in the cooler months of winter here in the south. I think the extra water she drinks will help prevent colic. She has never colic before, but I have seen other horses suffer, need emergency surgery and even die from colic. So for me, the salt fixes her lack of water. This was recommended by trainer."

"With salt put stright into my SmartPaks, I do not have to worry whether or not my horse is licking a block enough and I can adjust the amount based on the time of year, work, and weight."

"My horse won't use a salt lick so this is an easy way to make sure he's getting enough salt. I can change the amount depending on the time of year. Smartpaks are also much easier to handle than 50 lb bags of loose salt!"

"I added salt to my horse's smartpak since he was overdosing on his regular salt block. He loves salt and was biting off chunks of his salt block, so this was a nice alternative to going through a salt block every two days, but I know he's still getting his salt. I'm trying the Himalayan salt blocks to see if he likes them, but if not, I'll switch back to the salt in his smartpak."

"I have a breeding and competing stallion showing 4th level dressage and getting ready for the USEF Developing Young Horse. I had him on Succeed through SmartPaks for the last 2 years and then another product was suggested to work the same so I decided to try it and took my stallion off the Succeed. Within less than a month my horse had a mild colic and prior to Succeed he had another mild colic. I put him immediately back on the Succeed along with salt to encourage more water intake during the hot summer months. So far so good and no more colic! I highly recommend this product to show horses, breeding horses, any horse in a stressful situation. I know I will continue to feed Succeed to all my show horses."

"So glad to see Smart Pak offering plain old salt! After reading about salt deficiency in Horse Journal, it's a good peace of mind knowing my horses can get it in their Smart Paks. But tip for those new to feeding salt - start with a small amount, maybe 1/2 recommended amount, and work up to the regular amount. My horses wouldn't eat it at first, but I ordered the full serving instead of slowly working it up."

"My paint gelding would never lick his salt block like all the other horses. Instead, he would bite off the corners and chew them. This was equally bad for his teeth and the block, which would crumble and fall from the holder after only a day or two of this. Adding the loose salt to his feed is the best solution as it saves his teeth and is cheaper than buying block after block of salt (only to have most of it wasted). He gobbles it right up!"
