This product worked wonders for my horse and he is back to his old self. It's a very expensive product and you must give it for 30 days, so that is the only downside.

My horse was having issues I didn't know were connected. Ulcer symptoms are hard to recognize until they've progressed, because they look like so many different problems, until you look at them all together.
I took a gamble and didn't have my horse scoped, because I was pretty sure he had ulcers. Within a week of starting him on GG, he filled out in weight--he was always a hard keeper--and had more perk in his step. He also regained the suspension in his trot, which hadn't been there since before he had strangles and had to be confined to a stall 24/7 for a quite a while. I'm so glad that I spent the money, although that's a large chunk of change to dish out. It was a worthwhile investment in my horse's health and comfort.

After my otto was diagnosed with ulcers (rated 2) my vet said to put my horse on this if I really wanted the ulcers gone, or I can try and find something else to treat the ulcers. I went with this and after the vet recommended 21 days on it, the ulcers were all cleared up and 3 months later I have not had any trouble yet. Yes it is expensive, but well worth it. Ulcers are not something to really screw around with and in using this product I knew my horse was getting treatment. If the ulcers come back I will be sure to use this again.

My curly was dx was grade 2-3 ulcers. I used this medicine per vets instructions and she is doing wonderful. Getting the rx from the vet to smartpak was super easy and I received confirmation right away when they received it. Prices were much cheaper than getting meds at vet. Easy to adjust doses.

After having both of my horses suffer from colic, one of my horses developed an ulcer from the stress and sickness. I didn't have an endoscope performed on her but her attitude and her irritability at me getting close to her stomach gave me a good clue. My vet recommended a weeks worth of Gastroguard and after a few days doses of it, my horse seems completely different. She's more alert and more pleasant to be around. I'm always going to keep some of this on hand. The only down side is that it's hugely expensive. But it is worth it to make my horse better.
Hugely expensive but I had a totally different horse after one month of treatment. A horse in pain is a dangerous horse, if your horse has ulcers spend the money, it's well worth it.

Had my Morgan gelding scoped for ulcers and was then prescribed Gastrogard for 2-4 weeks afterward. After two weeks on Gastrogard there was significant improvement, so he is now on Smartpak GUT for the next month for maintenance. Hopefully I will have this problem under control.. we'll see.
Thanks Smartpak! Patty in San Diego

GastroGard paste help my horse get over his ucler and the colics he was suffering due to an infection. It only took a couple of days for Gastrogard to take effect and help his tummy. I'll be forever grateful and will use this product again at the first sight of colics or uclers or as a prevention if something appends. Love it!

most horses who compete or are placed under stressful training routines develop ulcers. if your horse shuts down, doesnt want to go forward, runs back, etc during a stressful event it may be from the pain of the ulcers. the forward movement is painful, therefore, the horse shuts down. if you treat you horse with gastro gard several days before traveling, a 1/4 tube per day thorughout the show, this dose will significantly help prevent ulcers. if you notice the difference, that is also a good sign that your horse did indeed have ulcers. if you think it is severe enought to warrant more treatment, have a gastroscopy done. if ulcers are found, the usual treatment (depending on severity) is 28 days of a prescribed dose of gastro-gard, followed by the "show dose" mentioned above. i show arabians on a national level and put ALL my horses on the "show dose".... i have noticed HUGE attitude improvement on every single horse.

I have a high strung, nervous Arabian and the summer of 2008 everything fell apart on us. Her under saddle behavior became unmanageable. She would spook and bolt at the canter and so many rides ended in frustration. She was scoped and found to have severe stomach ulcers. She did 35 days of full tubes of Gastrogard and was literally a different horse. Over the last year I was giving her 1/4 tube maintenance doses before stressful events, but that wasn't enough. She colicked and became very ill this week. Her temperature went up to 105.5 and she was in extreme distress, complete with shaking and panting. The vet did an ultrasound to rule out other causes, and diagnosed it as a bleeding ulcer with sepsis, and possible gutt perforation. She was given banamine to get the fever down, antibiotics, and a tube of Gastrogard, then monitored continuously for 24 hours. Her condition steadily and dramatically improved, she started to eat again and the combination of drugs made her very comfortable. It has now been 34 hours since her emergency treatment and she is 100% back to normal. She's had no banamine today, her temp is still normal, and she's eating and happy again. My vet said he's treated other such cases and 24-48 hours after the first full tube of Gastrogard, the horse is usually feeling 100% again. She's now back on full tubes of Gastrogard and also then Cimetidine and Stomach Soother for follow-up. We don't know why this mare is so ulcer prone, her management and diet are tailored for an ulcery horse, but Gastrogard will always be in the feed room from here on out. My only complaint of course is the extreme cost of the drug, BUT IT WORKS!

We give GastroGuard to the sensitive horses when we go to shows to help protect them against ulcers. One of the ponies is on it all of the time as well because of her sensitive stomach. It works great. The only downside is that it can be pricey.

Before gastrogard, many years ago our horse was near death at the UCD intensive care unit and nothing was working - until our great vet there read a paper about a horse that was saved from a gastric ulcer using (human tablets) of omeprazole. It saved our horse too and since GastroGard came out we have been huge fans. A fabulous product!

Marty Gets a Second Chance

In November I was given a Dutch ex-GP jumper. He had been over-jumped and starved (by two separate owners). I took it upon myself to make him healthy again. Just two weeks ago he fell severely ill and when Banamine didn't work, my vet diagnosed ulcers. After just two days on GastroGard Marty felt visibly better, and after a week he is now back to his normal self (we can go on light walking hacks!). I was happy to finally find out what was ailing him and I highly recommend GastroGard to anyone if it will help save your horse - knowing what it is to lose a partner.

My daughter's seven year old, TB Welsh pony, Lucky, coliced at a show away from home. We had noticed frequent loose stools when we went to shows during the spring and summer and had been using probiotic pastes to help the problem. Our vet, prior to the colic at the show, had considered the history of our nervous and high strung pony, and the intermittent loose stools that he was exhibiting at that time, and had suggested that we might want to consider treating Lucky for ulcers. She had given us a few tubes in case we decided to start the treatment. The expense of the entire treatment had caused us to delay the decision to begin treatment for ulcers. So when Lucky got sick at that show, we actually already had Gastrogard in our vet kit and began administering it that same day. (We were not using it at the time he got sick.) In hindsight, we should have listened to the vet's suggestion to treat before Lucky became sick enough to colic. He was in a lot of discomfort and he was not very cooperative when he was in pain. Our daughter and Lucky were unable to show in the last two shows of their series because of the ulcers. Just this past Saturday, a month after beginning treatment with Gastrogard, our pony is well and traveled to a new trainer this past weekend without any symptoms of ulcers. We plan to continue using Gastrogard in our prevention plan. I highly recommend this product to anyone that is in this same situation. Gastrogard is relatively expensive, but when you have an animal that your child is so attached to, you have to help them be well again. I consider it money well spent.

My TB, Red Rock Romeo, came down with ulcers last Christmas and it was devastating. We had recently moved barns and all of the stress got to him. He also hadn't been getting enough turnout at the old place, and not enough grass and hay, which may have added to the ulcers. I noticed a huge difference in his attitude after using GastroGard. The price is huge but the reward of a healthy horse is greater.

My dear horse "Dream" is an ex running TB. As a lot of other TB's he got Gastric Ulcers from stress and change. My vet gave me GastroGard. No more kicking in walls, no more biting. Before I had to pay $46 a day for GastroGard, but look at the price here!
