"One of my horses has been displaying signs of allergies, so my veterinarian and I tried to use this supplement to alleviate his coughing and runny nose and eyes. Although my horse eats everything (everything!) I could not get him to eat a majority of the granules of this supplement without quite a bit of finagling. We cut him down to a half dose which still did prove effective, however he still would leave residue in his bucket - for the price of this supplement this did not seem very economical. After some online research I found an alternative allergy supplement which is far less money and just as effective... and that he eats (and that he doesn't have to come off of for a competition)! If you can get your horse to eat this, it does work, but make sure to check their grain buckets often."

"I have a thoroughbred with persistent hives. I was told to try Tri Hist but after 2 weeks, I noticed no difference unfortunately. I know it helped a friend's horse with it's seasonal allergies and as for palatability, My horse never noticed to difference and ate it no problem."

"My poor gelding has terrible allergies and I tried this product after a recommendation from my vet. I thought the granuals smelled good (my horse is a very picky eater) but they fell through the pellet grain that I feed and my horse did not clean up his feeder...I might have had better results if I gave it to him in an oral syringe. I have since started him on the SmartPak SmartBreathe Pellets (starting the 3rd week of them) he still has the watery eyes and nose but is no longer coughing plus he cleans his entire feeder!"

"My 12 YO grey Arabian gets some type of allergic reaction every summer, likely airborne which results in raised gray oozing bumps and sores on his lower stifle, hind legs and top of his hocks. It does not seem to be itchy, just painful. It always goes away each winter and changing hay, grain, supplements, pasture, etc did not make a difference. Tri hist has helped almost 100 %. In a weeks time, the bumps and sores were almost gone! I am lucky that my Arabian is a four legged vacuum, and will eat anything I put in front of him, so have had no problems with him eating it. Other have commented that palatability has been an issue. He has always had skin sensitivities and is always the horse who gets a rash or reaction when others don't so am very glad the Tri Hist has helped him."

"My horse's dose was half an ounce by weight, which turned out to be a level teaspoon of Tri Hist. I tasted the stuff and read the reviews, then decided to mix it in sugar. I addedd\ more and more till I could stand the taste myself, then an extra splash to get my horse to eat it. I wound up adding half a cup to each dose, but he's licking his bucket. And he's not coughing, sneezing and no longer has runny eyes and nose. Good stuff if you can stand it."

"My mare has heaves and my vet prescribed this for her along with steroid shots. After the shots we continued with this product and it has been very beneficial for her. No coughing and her breathing is better. She eats it fine mixed with a minimal amount of feed. Cost here is $10.00 less then purchasing from my vet."

"My vet prescribed this to my 19 year old Palomino gelding who has a bug allergy. Since it is prime bug season and he goes out at night I decided to try it. At first he would not eat it as he is a picky eater. I mixed it with Triple Crown Senior Feed, added a little water, and stirred it around and he eats it every day now. He itching is much better. The battle is to figure our what to mix it with. The Senior Feed worked for us"

"This product was effective for my horse's allergies when he actually swallowed it! I agree with most others, my horse would not eat his food if it was in there. He always knew, even when I added molassis. It must be awful to taste. Also, tried pasting and it does not paste well."

"I have one of those horses that won't eat their food if you put anything on it. Even though the Tri-Hist has a delicious vanilla smell, he doesn't like it-I've been having to give the medication orally. Also, it doesn't seem to be helping. My horse has a fairly severe case of allergic rhinitis (allergic to pollen) and constantly shakes his head when the pollen comes out- the shaking doesn't appear to have subsided at all. Even increasing the frequency of dosing to twice a day didn't help. Only 10% of horses respond to anti-histamines anyways, so I wasn't real hopeful to begin with. But I would recommend trying it on other horses simply because you never know how they will respond."
"My horse stopped eating it and no mix of anything will get her to eat it again. It's also hard to get it to dissolve in liquid to give it via syringe.
When she took it regularly I noticed she wasn't itching her bug bites. Now she's itching at them. At least fly season is almost over and I'll have a few months to think of something else."
"My 23yr old AQHA mare has developed bug allergies as the years progressed. After a trail ride, she had welts all over her; she looked like a mountain range. While she's not bad about itching them against things, she is good at getting other horses to nibble/scratch for her resulting in lots of open sores. Regardless of heat, she has to be blanketed and masked.
I first tried hydroxyzine. It seemed to work well, but at ~$75 a month I simply couldn't afford it (college student). I had to special order it through a company my vet gets the medication from. The powder was very clumpy and sticky (similar to flour texture). While that could be good to stick on grain, it also stuck on everything else; I felt like a wasted a lot on the scoop; side of the container, if I got it on my hand, etc. My barn does PM supplements normally, and this one had to be given AM & PM; I know it was a hassle for morning feeders.
I saw this on here and talked to my veterinarian about it since I already order a SmartPak (SmartFlex Senior Pellets). We decided to give it a go because my vet has seen good results with other clients. First, I like that she only needs 1/2sc once daily so it's more convenient. It's about 1/3 of the cost of her old medication. I have it in her SmartPak so I don't have to worry about any supplement being wasted. It comes every month so I don't need to worry about calling a separate vendor.
I can tell when my mare doesn't eat her supplement because she will have a few welts here and there (depending on if she hasn't eaten it one night or multiple nights), so it seems to work. The texture is more "grainy" like dry sand, so it can go to the bottom of the feed bucket. I have no clue to the taste level. My mare is convinced that anything in her grain bin but her grain (and carrots, apples, or grapes) is poison; even the Senior supplement. It comes from a round of antibiotics she had to take last year; since then she's been very wary of anything and everything, so I have to make a "mash" for her nightly anyway.
I've considered adding SmartOmega to her SmartPak since I've heard that can also help skin inflammation, but I haven't decided for sure yet."
"When my vet prescribed Tri-hist for heaves I purchased it through him for $80! I nearly fell over when I saw how inexpensive it is at Smart Pak. Unfortunately he dislikes the taste, it is very bitter and I need to supplement with more grain or other tasty morsels. In addition it is not terribly effective, it helped him get over the worst of the spring outbreak however with the constant dust in our area I am forced to give it to him daily instead of the recommended "as needed". He still coughs despite proper management so next vet call I will ask for a product that is not an anti-histamine which I don't believe is effective for all types of heaves."

"I have a horse that is allergic to almost everything. Aside from putting him in a glass bubble, this has been a life saver. The only thing about it is that it is very granular. Does not mix with feed well, and can get stuck in a dose syringe. Mix with something wet, like apple sauce or we feed a very wet beet pulp and it is easy to hid in that. Over all, a great product that we can not live with out."

"My vet suggested Tri-Hist to treat a severe case of hives. I'm not even sure my horse tasted it; it was more like he took one sniff and went on a hunger strike. I didn't have a syringe big enough to squirt applesauce through, so I used sugar and made a drench. It took some doing, but eventually the stuff went down the hatch. It was worth being called Mary Poppins to see those awful welts disappear! If only it came in grape..."
