"I do not live somewhere terribly cold but we often have nights in the high 20s. That said, this deicer is wonderful. I am AMAZED how much more water the horses drink when the water is kept warmer. With this deicer, I fill the tank twice a week. Without it, I was filling the tank 3 times every two weeks. It gets warm but not so hot that it burns on contact. It turns on at 40 degrees so it doesn't run all the time. We frequently have winter days in the 60s. I like the power savings. I can't say how it would work somewhere much colder, but it is perfect for my situation. This one replaced an identical one that still worked but was cracked by a pony that pulled it from the tank and played with it all afternoon. For the price, I decided to replace the cracked one. (very ornery pony!!!) None of the other horses or ponies have ever messed with the deicer. The one I replaced was 8 years old."
