"My horse LOVES her garlic. She will eat all the flakes right out of my hand( which she prefers). I only use the garlic starting in the spring and stop in the fall for the flies. It really does seem to help if I start early enough and when she gets regular exercise, the garlic smell comes out in her skin. It has been working wonders for the flies! It is cheap and well worth it!"

"I've been supplementing my Thoroughbred with garlic from another company for almost 2 years and have noticed that he is definitely less bothered by insects during the buggy months. I was very happy to see that I can now include garlic in my horse's SmartPak supplements instead of packaging it separately. Great job SmartPak!"

"I started my new OTTB gelding on garlic flakes in an attempt to reduce the amount of insects around him because he is very sensitive. We started in the winter, so we will see how effective this is as spring and summer roll in. He does eat all of the flakes for the most part but he doesn't Love them and wouldn't eat them on their own, which is the only reason I gave it a 4 for palatability."

"Both of my horses have been eating garlic for years; i feed it to improve their immune systems, bugs and breathe (hahah). When I switched from granulated garlic i did so because i didn't know how the garlic was process and how old it was. great thing about this product, dried garlic essentials last so much longer in this form and storage is easy, just a tight closed container."

"I got this to help with the flies. I was hoping it would get rid of all the flies, but it didn't. It does keep a lot of them off. I don't have to spray her all that much. It's worth the price, and I get it by the bag. She's a picky eater, so I have to mix it. She will eat it only if I doctor it up with some grain."

"I wanted to get the garlic flakes for my mare who had a weird skin rash and thought it would help suport her immune system but sadly she didn't eat the scoop I gave her!. The quality of the garlic is great, really thick garlic flakes but only about ten flakes constituted one scoop.:( Loved the over all supplement but can't afford to feed a supplement that my horse won't eat!! So bottom line, Yes I would reccomend this to a friend as long as the horse isn't a picky eater:)"

"I really like Hilton Herb's Garlic Flakes over other garlic supplements that I've used. These are slices of garlic, rather than garlic powder or garlic granules like other company's sell. It allows the horse to eat garlic without overpowering and sabatoging the entire feed by mixing all together as a powder would do. These lovely flakes stay intact and remain separate from the feed. The horses really do enjoy them as part of their feed recipe. Once I nearly left them out but the feed 'recipe' didn't smell as good, rather plain and bland. I didn't realize the little scoop of garlic flakes makes their food smell so good. I think it does a good job of keeping flies off the horses, just like Smart Bugoff. It works well for two horses, but not the draft-X. Neither product (Smart Bugoff or Garlic Flakes) work well for the draft-X."

"I have a mare who was getting attacked by flies so I put her on this. For the first few days it worked really well but now it has almost stopped working. The flies are now just as bad and doesn't deter them in the slightest. I was wondering if she was getting enough so I measured it and it seemed like she wasn't getting enough of the garlic. It was less then one tablespoon. I was a little disappointed and will not be buying this product again. I am now looking for a fly control that will work."

"Ever since I was little, I have always been told a little garlic in a horse's feed will keep the flies away. I hadn't ever tried it before and I thought during the summer (when the flies are at their worst) would be a good time to experiment! For taste, my horse adored it. He seemed to readily gobble all of the garlic up. After a short amount of time, I noticed the flies were not near as bad and eventually I saw very little flies around him. I also noticed there were less flies around his stall entirely. I knew it was working when my horse also started to smell faintly of garlic bread! (Not bad, though!) I would highly recommend Garlic Flakes, it's a more natural approach and even my picky eater loved it!"

"I was always told garlic will keep the bugs off so I thought why not try them. I was very pleased with the results. Not only does it limit the bugs who land on my horse but also seams to help keep the bugs out of the muck heap (where they lay eggs and new ones are born) keeping the whole property less buggy.
my horse did make a funny face when he ate them for the first time but he ate them all anyway and has not flipped a lip to them since!

"Great Garlic Flakes for horses. Had to soak mine in water, she prefers applesauce, anything to hide the flavor. But my horse is very picky. I feed her more of it so I know she gets a portion of it. Then whatever she leaves she will get next time."

"I love this product! Its organic, my horse eats it up quickly, and the flakes are small! I have seen such a difference in the amount of ticks I find on my mare. I used to pick ticks off everytime she came in from the pasture and would find multiple ticks all over her! Now I give her a good rub over with my hand and find one maybe every so often. She has two bug bites which is a huge change from the usual amount last summer, and also there is hardly any flies in my barn! I have even started feeding garlic to my pigs to help keep down the fly activity in the barn as well, and honestly it really is working! It does not keep the moose and horse flys away but the house flies and black flies are no where to be found! I used to coat her in fly spray twice a day but now I spritz her in the afternoon to help with the horse flies. I love this, why have I not been feeding all my livestock garlic all these years!?! Best thing is my barn smells like an Italian pizzaria :) yum!!!"

"I am not real sure yet, but it seems to be helping. Not 100%, but may 65%. They eat it just fine and it has never been left behind. It hasn't gotten real hot here yet but the flies have been biting and the ticks really have, but it just seems they are not as bothered by them as much so far this year."

"My horse, "Kramer" appears to be bothered less by flies & mosquitoes since using the garlic flakes for a month. He absolutely loves the taste and will eat them out of my hand.
Also, he doesn't smell like a giant garlic-y meatball!

"Flies are not thick around S. Indiana but they aren't nonexistent. My horses still have flies after being on the flakes for three months but they don't have as many as the horses who aren't. I would say my horses have half as many flies around them and in the stall they have none. The mosquitos are totally avoiding my mare though, the giant deer flies are not detoured sadly. I would advise this if you have an extra $7 a month to splurge and want to make life tolerable for your horse."

"Ive always fed my horses garlic long before it was "cool" to do so. but I'm so glad to see that smartpak is now caring a basic garlic at a good price. the quilty of this brand is amazing its human grade and smells oh so yummy id eat it! my horse loves the tast so much you would think i was feeding her sweet feed.
Ive had a lot of people tell me it does not work, but I have always seen a diffrence when my horses get feed it and when they dont. it does take a good month (4-6 weeks) just like any other supplement to get into the system.
how it works:
1) once it gets in the system it helps to keep the common fly away from the horses because the smell of the garlic in the stall drives them away but also more importantly it keeps the flies away from the horses wast witch in turns takes away there breeding ground reducing the flies.
2) it helps to repel blood sucking insects such as the horse/deer fly, tics, and misquotes. when it gets into the horses system these pests don't like the "taste" of the blood any more. meaning they tend to leave the horse alone.
3) when feed year round it helps to boost there immune system. it really helped a mare i had who use to always get sick no matter what i did, after feeding her garlic she very rarely got her "normal" colds. if your like me and you travel and show a lot this is a nice cheep easy way to keep your horse from picking up "the bugs" that are out there.
4) it helps the look of there coats makes them nice and shinny! :)
and at about $7 a month for all of that how can you beat that? oh and by keeping the fly population down this means way less fly spray and way less money spent on it. oh and NO my horse never "smelled funny" because of it.
