"To be honest, when I tried on this coat at first I was ready to put it back into the return box. However, something funny happened when I began folding it -- I couldn't do it! As I put it back on the hanger and zipped it up, I noticed all of the truly amazing detail. Like the zig-zag stitch on the nape of the hood. Or the wrist fittings and buttons. The double pockets in the front. Quilted stitching. Y'all, this jacket is GORGEOUS.
The materials and construction quality is exceptional. Color is a very rich, almost black navy. The weight of the jacket is ideal; light enough for windy days and would layer easily for much colder ones. It feels warm and cozy. No itch or discomfort about it.
So, you ask what WAS the problem? Why did I contemplate its return? Really, it's the small designer preferences that channeled some annoyances...
First off, the hood 'flaps' unsnapped build your shoulders up to the size of a football player's with a Michael Jackson influence (see below paragraph). There is no way to adhere them to something. When they are snapped around your neck, it looks great... but who's going to be that could all the time? Especially in the South. It is detachable, but I find it annoying to have to remember to attach it, especially with something as unpredictable as weather. I'm unsure why I never noticed the fit before... perhaps its because SmartPak's photo is not on a model & the Gersemi's website doesn't even show it with the hood on! If this hood rolled up inside the collar, you'd have an A+ jacket. No questions asked.
Secondly, it has a little too much flash for me. Gold buttons, gold zippers, gold logo charms off of said zippers, golden embroidered logo on the front. Thank God the embroidery on the back isn't gold! (Its very tasteful. Perfect size.) I feel like its a little too much "Look at me! I bought this jacket from Gersemi!" Especially for the horse world. I like subtle class. This jacket needs to come down a notch.
But I have played with it. For the past 30 minutes, I've tried out different hood configurations and played with the bling. If you snap the hood flaps underneath the hood, it looks much better. You can get a bit of a funky profile so make sure to adjust accordingly. Putting the flaps underneath flattens it a little bit; over the hood it becomes a pail. For the gold issue, I tucked in the little zipper charms inside the top pockets so you couldn't see them. I was amazed at how much better it looked. I'm thinking about cutting off the main zipper charm to further reduce the flash.
So, was it love at first sight? No, but it was much like the beginnings of many relationships. Awkward first date, a growing acceptances and adding a couple of compromises along the way. For the price tag, I want to love absolutely every inch of this thing. Barring the above compromises, this really is the most gorgeous riding jacket I've seen in a while, and I'm very happy with my purchase."
