Customer questions and answers for SmartGut® Ultra Pellets

Question

Can this product replace the preventative ulcergard in times of stress?

My horse compelted the 30 days of gastrogard treatment. He has since been maintained on smartgut, with 1/4 tube of ulcergard each day when traveling. Can this product, every day, replace each of the two above?

Each horse is an individual. I will be dosing my guy with gastrogard when he is in a stressful enviornment as a precaution. I have had other horses who did fine with their daily dose of "Gut" without additional support. My guy is very sensitive and emotional so requires more support.

Ulcergard turns off acid production in the stomach, which is produced all day, every day (not just when eating, like in humans). However, products that are in feed can only coat the stomach or otherwise act defensively to combat the acid. I use another ulcer supplemen daily and since they have been on it, they haven't had any problems with ulcers, but if your horse is prone to ulcers (lots of traveling, lots of stress, lots of concentrate), I would stick to giving ulcergard because it will DEFINITELY work EVERY TIME. If you were to try another type of daily regimine, I would keep the ulcergard on hand in case you need to supplement or change back.

Thanks for your question. Because SmartGut Ultra was clinically proven to work, it is the best choice for providing on-going, daily support for horses who are prone to gastric issues, especially after GastroGard® treatment is completed. Based on the description of your horse’s situation, you may want to consider switching him from SmartGut to SmartGut Ultra for maintaining stomach health. For an even more comprehensive gastric health program, you could certainly continue to administer UlcerGard as needed during times of extra stress, such as when your horse is transported.

Question

Study on SmartGut Ultra

The bar chart in the study shows that 42 days out, the control horses and the SmartGut horses were at the same level. Please explain how this indicates SmartGut should be fed at that point. I am looking for a supplement to put my horse on after omeprazole treatment and am considering this supplement. I have tried slipperly elm and aloe to no effect, and thus am having to repeat the omeprazole.

Thanks for your question. On day 42, the horses were not exposed to any stress factors, and therefore gastric ulcers scores normalized across both groups of horses. This finding supports the thinking that stress (mental as well as physical) predisposes the equine stomach to ulcers and that horses undergoing stress-whether from training, competing, traveling, feed changes—may need support from a supplement during these times. We recommend feeding SmartGut Ultra on an ongoing basis for horses who have been treated with omeprazole as well as horses who are under stress.

Gloria: I was also puzzled by the chart but my understanding is that you continue to feed it at the same level. I think the trial ended at 42 days.
For our horses we would just continue indefinitely, if it works for your horse.
My horse seems to really like this and I do think his stomach feels better. He's in really good shape now, is forward and our training is finally progressing again (we are 3rd/4th level dressage). I put him on omeprazole for a few weeks and then started SmartGut.
Good luck!

Question

Can you use this product on a more prophylactic basis? As in, feed it a few weeks/days before in an "as needed basis". Would it still be effective?

Thanks for your question. This supplement was designed to be fed daily for ongoing support, and the research was also based on daily feeding of SmartGut Ultra. Using this supplement on an as-needed basis won’t provide the same level of gastric health benefits as daily feeding, therefore we recommend feeding SmartGut Ultra daily for best results.

Because of the difference between this and the Omeprazole you would find in Gastrogard or the like, it would not be advisable to use this on an as-needed basis. These products are helpful only when they are fed, and help more when they are fed for an extended period of time, as opposed to the Omeprazole which shuts off the acid production in the stomach. If your horse suffers from digestive upset, I would highly recommend feeding something like this daily or using an Omeprazole product when your horse is under stress. Otherwise, you're really opening yourself up to ulcers and wasting the money you'll spend using this "as-needed".

Question

Will it help if not started right after treatment with omeprazole?

I have a mare who was treated for 28 days with omeprazole. Treatment ended about 4 months ago, and she was kept on another (cheaper) gastric supplement afterward. Within a week of beginning omeprazole, she stopped a 12+-year cribbing habit, but she has recently started up again. I was looking at switching her to SmartGut Ultra, but am wondering if I waited too long and need to do another round of omeprazole first for best results. Of course I want to do the best I can for her, but at the same time I'd like to try to leave a little something in the bank for things like groceries... Thanks!

Thanks for your question. SmartGut Ultra is designed to help maintain a healthy stomach in horses that are prone to, or have been treated for, gastric lesions. If you have any concerns that your mare has developed ulcers again, we recommend checking in with your vet regarding another round of GastroGard treatment before starting SmartGut Ultra for optimal results.

I would try omeprozole for two weeks while adding SmartGut at the same time. SmartGut seems to really have a soothing effect for tummies and behavior related to their upset.

Thanks for your question. It is our understanding that the reason USEF sometimes advises against feeding licorice is that some forms of licorice are blended with clove or other plants that may contain a substance called eugenol, which is specifically listed among the USEF Forbidden Substances. However the licorice used in SmartGut Ultra is certified eugenol-free; SmartGut Ultra has also been tested by an independent laboratory and found to be eugenol-free. Therefore this formula does not contain any Forbidden Substances under current USEF rules.
