Customer questions and answers for Natural Psyllium Fiber (monthly purge)

Question

Can this product be given to an insulin resistant pony?

Our pony can't have any sugars as she is insulin resistant and has chronic laminitis. Is this product safe for horses like her? She also has sand issues (our soil is basically sand) and we've had to have her treated for sand colic twice. My vet recommends I give her plain, natural psyillium fiber, but she won't eat anything I put it into. It's so gooey that I can't push it through a syringe either, and if I make it really wet and runny, she just spits it out. I am looking for an alternative.

Thanks for your question. Natural Psyllium Fiber has only a minimal amount of sugar in the flavoring of the product. While it should be appropriate for your pony, we’d recommend discussing the supplement and any changes in your pony’s diet with your veterinarian.

Psyllium is actually recommended for insulin resistant horses and we have a horse at the barn on it in a low 1oz dose daily. In theory it absorbs the extra sugars. Can't hurt. I've had great results.

Question

How does it work? Can this be administered in water?

My horse had colic surgery fall of 2012. Currently we are trying to get him back on a sand colic preventative schedule. I have tried to hand feed unsuccessfully. I have also tried to mix with treats that he likes, again, unsuccessfully. He has refused to eat it. His grain is mixed w/water.. (ratio 1:2) Can I mix this product into the soupy grain mixture? Will the product work if it is in water?

Thanks for your question. The manufacturer does not recommend feeding this supplement mixed with water or anything wet, such as apple sauce. This is because wetting this particular supplement could pose a choking risk and would also make the product less effective. If your horse is unwilling to eat the Natural Psyllium Fiber, you might consider trying another sand colic supplement, such as SmartSand Purge (which are pellets with apple banana flavoring) to see if he finds another brand more palatable.
