Question

garlic and anemia

Hi There,
My vet told me and I read last year that garlic can make horses anemic. I really want to try your Bugoff product but am very concerned about anemia which would be worse than the flies. Any thoughts on this?

thanks,
Tammie

I discussed this with my vet, and she felt that the amount of garlic would not be an issue in a normal, healthy horse. I find this product does help with my guys. I also practice good sanitation along with using a barn fan and fly predators.

Thanks for your question. In 2005 there was a paper which evaluated the safety of garlic in horses. It showed if horses consumed excessive amounts of garlic, they could develop a type of anemia called Heinz Body Anemia. To put the amount into perspective, a 1,100 lb horse would have to eat 125 grams of pure garlic twice daily- this amount is 83 times what is provided in a daily serving of SmartBug-Off (1,500 mg, or 1.5 grams per serving). When fed at moderate levels like the amount in SmartBug-Off, garlic has multiple health benefits and helps to deter biting insects.

Thanks for your question. We’re sorry to hear about your experience with your horse last summer. SmartBug-Off contains 450 mg of apple cider vinegar, along with garlic and brewer’s yeast, to make horses less appealing to biting insects. As a member of the National Animal Supplement Council we do keep track of any issues horses may experience when given any of the supplements that we carry, and we’ve not heard of horses experiencing weight loss when given SmartBug-Off. However since your particular horse hasn’t done well with apple cider vinegar in the past, we’d recommend discussing it with his veterinarian before adding it to his diet.

If it was my older horse, I would definitely think that his stomach may be a factor, as the vinegar is acidic and maybe he should have a stomach product added to his diet, like SmartGut while he is using Apple Cider Vinegar to reduce acidosis.

I have had EXCELLENT results from using Bug Off. But I did have a larger horse, black, black is not good with bugs, and I had to double to little tubs. I could ride with friends whose horses were mauled by the bugs, and my guy was OK. It was weird. We live in the land of 10,000 lakes, and I know our mosquito population is far higher than anywhere else other than maybe Alaska. I would not do it any other way. New horse, and I am buying Bug Off even though she is not black.

I would like to hear more info on ticks if anyone can share.

Thank you again

Thanks for your question. SmartBug-Off provides a combination of Garlic, Brewer’s Yeast, and Apple Cider Vinegar to make horses less appealing to insects, including ticks and mosquitoes. However if these insects are particularly bad in your area, or if your horse is especially sensitive, you might also consider using a fly sheet like the Amigo Bug Buster as well as a fly repellent like Endure Sweat-Resistant Fly Spray.

My experience has been that it repels mosquitos as well. Can't be positive about ticks, but we have noticed a significant decrease in them since using this product. It works by changing the way the horse smells and tastes to blood sucking insects, so it would make sense that any insect would be repelled by it. Hope that helps!

Thanks for your question. If your horse suffers from sweet itch, you might want to consider trying SmartBug-Off along with SmartOmega 3 Ultra. SmartBug-Off includes Garlic, Brewer’s Yeast and Apple Cider Vinegar to help deter biting insects while SmartOmega 3 Ultra provides higher levels of Omega 3s from flax, fish oil and chia seed. We’d also suggest a fly sheet like the Amigo Bug Buster that offers built in BUZZ BLOCKER insect repellent, as well as a belly band for added protection from biting insects.

Thanks for your question. Although there is no concern with a horse re-ingesting SmartBug-Off, coprophagy (or manure eating) in adult horses is considered an unhealthy behavior. This may be caused by a lack of nutrients or the chewing time associated with high-fiber diets. We would recommend evaluating his diet with your veterinarian to ensure he is getting what he needs to help eliminate this behavior.

If your horse is eating his feces my best guess is that he is lacking in the nutritional department or he is bored. I have found that an overview of what you are feeding him will find something lacking or try adding hay in a hay net to slow his eating and give him something to do!

Thanks for your question. We recommend adding the SmartBug-Off to your horse’s feed about a month before fly season starts in your geographic area, then to keep your horse on the supplement through fly season. Most of our customers continue to feed the supplement through the entire fly season then switch to a supplement like SmartOmega 3 during the winter, while some choose to keep their horses on it year round depending on their climate.

Question

Is this effective against Indiana Horse Flies?

We've tried everything; they lay eggs in leaves, so other feed-through fly controls don't work for the horseflies. They're huge, about 1.25" and they are relentless. We found one spray/wipe that helps deter them, but they continually bombard the horses, landing hard enough to make a loud sound. The spray/wipe is supposed to be good for a week - we've been using it several times a day to keep the horseflies from actually landing and biting. Thanks.

Thanks for your question Beth! Inflammation is a normal, healthy response by the body and required for healing. However, sometimes the body overreacts, doing more harm than good. The three ingredients you mention--MSM, Omega 3 fatty acids, and antioxidants—all help the body properly manage stress so that it doesn’t overreact. By providing compounds that assist the body’s own processes for dealing with stress, owners ensure their horses’ cells, tissues and organs don’t become overwhelmed by day-to-day living and wear-and-tear strain. It’s promoting health from the inside out!

I have fed it with the components of SmartCombo with no problems. I feed with their grain to help minimize the hit to the tummy of all the vitamins at once.
I tend to see reactions within the first week or two, and sometimes within the first day or two, on stuff that isn't working for one of my horses. I have had no issues with this particular product with any of them. In fact, I think it helps keep their tummies settled. (no scientific basis at all for this- just my observation of the one with the ulcer problems)

I have used SimpliFly for 6+ years, and both of my horses also started Smart Bug-Off last season due to the gnats and noseeums. Neither had any problems with the combination (Both were added to evening feed & I also use fly predators & fly strips in the barn.). We can definitely confirm the reduction in gnat annoyance and fly reduction, but don't think either deterred the remaining flies from biting - I don't believe any "safe" product can get them all. I've just restarted the bug-off for the second season - last year drought and this year very wet, so we'll see. I have no safety concerns about about having both supplements in their diets. There were no bad reactions last year and I see no reason to expect any this season either.

Thanks for your question. It’s important not to make abrupt changes to the diet and management of pregnant mares. For this reason we always recommend seeking your veterinarian’s advice before adding any new supplements to your mare’s diet. SmartBug-Off, like many other supplements, has not been specifically evaluated for use in breeding animals or young foals, therefore we suggest following your vet’s advice on feeding this supplement. We really wish we could provide a more helpful, detailed answer, but with such precious cargo on board, pregnant mares really do need to be “handled with care,” and they need individualized recommendations from a veterinarian.

My 26-year-old horse is already on Smartflex Senior pellets, so he is getting 12,000 mg of MSM daily.

The SmartBug-Off pellets contain 2250 mg of MSM/dose. If I were to start him on the SmartBug-Off, would he then be getting more than the maximum recommended daily dose of MSM (12,000 + 2250 mg)? He weighs approximately 1100 pounds. Thank you.

It has been my experience down here in Maryland that all weapons have to be used against black biting flies. That stated, I use SmartBug OFF, Fly Predators with a double amount than the actual horses that are on the property, as you have to account for Deer, fox, etc, and Calm Coat Fly spray seems to repel well, although not water repellent.
