Question

Barn sour and spooks

I have now used your product for 1.5 weeks and have noticed that his spooking was better but he still has some issues. I thought maybe this product would help with riding hin away from the barn but he still gets worked up and prances to much. I've been working with him on this but was hoping that this would settle this down a little bit so he would focus on the ride and not the barn. I'm going to continue to try it but thought maybe you might have someting else that would work better. He is on Ultra Clam pellets. What do you suggest?

Thanks for your question. With any nutrient-based supplement such as SmartCalm Ultra, it can take up to 4-8 weeks to see full results. We recommend feeding this supplement for a bit longer before evaluating the results. In addition, we also suggest assessing your horse’s diet and exercise schedule to see if any improvements can be made that might help with his energy level. If after two months you haven’t seen the results you were looking for, please feel free to give us a call and we’d be happy to make further recommendations.

Hey! Just wanted to let you know, when I spoke to someone at SmartPak about the Smart Calm Ultra, I asked them how long I should allow the supplement to take effect. She said to let it work for at least 2 months. Each horse responds differently to every supplement so since it's only been a week and a half, I'd at least give it a month and if not, more. You can always get your money back!

I started to see results after just 2 weeks of feeding daily but it took a full 2 months for my horse to show a complete and consistent change in her behavior. I fed the supplement after a ride usually (as a treat with her beet pulp.)

Thanks for your question. SmartCalm Ultra Pellets are designed to be fed daily to provide ongoing support for proper nervous system function, helping to manage nervousness and support your horse’s ability to focus. Because this product works by providing nutrients (such as vitamin B1 and magnesium) that your horse’s body needs for a healthy, balanced nervous system, it may take a few weeks before you see the full results of this product. However it does not need to be given at a specific time of day relative to your riding time. If you are looking for a calming supplement that can be given on an occasional basis, you might consider the SmartCalm Ultra Paste, which is designed for use as-needed during stressful situations. The paste should be given 12 hours prior to your ride, then again 2 to 4 hours immediately before. Please note that the paste is designed to work best when used as needed for a horse that is also being fed SmartCalm Ultra Pellets daily.

It's not a "drug", something you feed before you ride. It doesn't dope them up. So with regular maintenance (I feed the reg 60g dose every morning) you should have a consistent result.Ride when you like.

Hey! I've been using this product for over two years on my gelding. I can tell you it does not work instantly - but if you use the ultra and not the regular, you'll probably notice a difference within two days or so. The reason I say this is because I definitely can tell when my gelding is OFF the supplement. He doesn't think before he spooks and becomes much more nervous when not on the product. The ultra promotes some sort of happy feeling so my guy is always pleasant to be around and always thinks before he spooks which normally causes him to think through the situation and hence no spooking. The regular I feel doesn't give the same effect.

Question

my horse is currently on Quiessence

My horse is currently on Quiessence---i have been using it for over 7 months. It doesnt really seem to be having an effect on his behavior. Other riders at my barn have recommended smartcalm ultra pellets. Should I allow a slow transition to this new supplement or is it ok to immediately switch over?

Thanks for your question. Although grain and hay changes do need to be made slowly, since the daily serving size of most supplements is small, most of our customers start their horses on the full amount of the new supplement right away.

You can switch immediately. I usually notice a positive difference within a day or two once started on it and if I "test" by removal, usually one day off is noticeable. I have had at least ten horses on this product; it really makes a huge difference in ability to focus and increases shortness of time needed to recover from a "scare" even on the spookiest of horses. Please consider that you cannot entirely change a horse on a "magic pill", but modifying a difficult behavior is possible with attention to supplementation and feed input. All my horses in training are on this product because it increases focus.

MAXSMOM,

Here is my opinion based on what I would do with my own horses while also attempting to take into account your horses personal needs.

If you'd like to switch to the new supplement gradually you can do so; this would technically be the safest. Depending on how much of the quiessence you use per day and how much smart calm you plan to feed, a gradual change might be difficult considering you will end up just counting out pellets at some point. An additional factor to consider is that he wouldn't be getting a full dose of either supplement so it might take you longer to notice results.

You can also take him off Quiessence for two weeks to a month and just add the smartcalm after the two week - 1 month break. The break would give your guy a chance to let the Quiessnece run out of his system before adding anything new.

A third option, if he is a pretty stout guy who doesn't colic then you can try just switching him over immediately. You know your horse best. Personally I would go with option two as it is easier on your barn manager, your horse, and your wallet :-) Some horses need to be on calming supplements all the time however, so in that instance you might be better off with option 1 or 3.

Thanks for your question. SmartCalm Ultra is our best-selling calming formula and is ideal for horses who are spooky, anxious, and unfocused. This supplement supports nervous system health, which may help your horse maintain a calm disposition. If the nervous behavior your mare is exhibiting is new, we would recommend consulting with your veterinarian and trainer about her diet and exercise program to ensure that she is getting what she needs.

When I bought my 10 yr. old paint 4 years ago he had been at the same home for 8 years. He was really upset with the new move and people he did not know. A friend suggested the SmartCalm ultra for him. It is the best thing I could have done. It only took about a week for it to get into his system and it really helped him. It did not change the great way he rode or make him sleepy in the ring. It just helped him to adjust to his new home. I have been using the product for over 3 yrs now and love how it helps my horse. If you feed pellet grain, the SmartCalm ultra pellets are great.

YES! This will calm your horse. Your horse will become more calm, less spooky. Horse will become more confident with time. Then you can lower the dose if you want. Ultra Calm is natural, no drugs. Safe for your horse. This product made my horse pay attention and listen to me. He had been laid up with an injury for months, then I was not riding because I had surgery. He became disrespectful, he bucked, he bit. I became fearful. Even thought about selling him. Now after a couple months he is very sweet, no biting etc. No rearing. He is doing so great. He just turned 4 so I am very impressed with this Ultra Calm Powder. The powder smells like cake batter, sweet. He eats it mixed with a little grain. I think you should give it a try!

Thanks for your question. SmartCalm Ultra is intended for horses that are anxious, spooky or unfocused. Depending on the cause of your horse’s excess energy, it may help him feel more relaxed and at ease. We also recommend evaluating his diet and exercise program with your trainer or veterinarian to ensure he is getting what he needs. The smallest size we offer is 3.75 lb bucket which lasts 28 days. We also offer this product in a resealable bag if you prefer, however that option is a 7.5 lb bag which lasts 56 days.

Thanks for your question. It’s important not to make abrupt changes to the diet and management of pregnant mares. For this reason we always recommend seeking your veterinarian’s advice before adding any new supplements to your mare’s diet. SmartCalm Ultra Pellets, like many other supplements, has not been specifically evaluated for use in breeding animals, therefore we suggest following your vet’s advice on feeding this supplement.

Hi,
I'm not sure I would use this product on a pregnant mare without checking with my Vet first. The ingredients are natural but pregnant mares are sensitive. Maybe more turnout would help. I keep my pregnant mares turned out as much as possible until the last couple of weeks.

Question

Would this be good for a young Arab in training who has a hard time focusing? Should I start with SmartCalm first?

I have a 3 year old Arabian who goes between being sensible and being "anxious." He is not spooky most of the time, but I have noticed he does have a hard time focusing, and he can be anxious/nervous. I'm just looking to make him more focused on his job rather than looking at what is going on outside the ring. I also have never used a calming supplement, and I am not sure if jumping right to ultra would be good or first trying SmartCalm to see if that works.

Thanks for your question. SmartCalm Ultra is our best-selling calming formula and is ideal for horses who are spooky, anxious, and unfocused. SmartCalm offers a lower level of support for horses who may be slightly nervous or excitable. Based on your description, it sounds like SmartCalm Ultra would be a better fit for your horse, however you could certainly start with SmartCalm and move him up to SmartCalm Ultra if he is still not as settled as you’d like.

Thanks for your question, Sunny! USEF never states that a supplement of any kind is “legal” and therefore SmartPak cannot state this either. However we can tell you that for SmartCalm Ultra, which is nutrient-based, none of the ingredients (Vitamin B1, Magnesium, Taurine, Inositol, Tryptophan) are specifically listed as forbidden substances with USEF.

Thanks for your question. Since your horse has HYPP, we recommend checking with your veterinarian before adding anything new to his or her diet. However, we can tell you that SmartCalm Ultra Pellets are considered to be low in potassium, as they contain 0.5% potassium per 60 gram serving.
