Thanks for your question. The SmartControl IR Pellets include ingredients that help support proper metabolic function which includes maintaining a healthy weight. We recommend working with your veterinarian to determine the cause of your horse’s issues and decide if this is an appropriate supplement to add to his diet.

Yes, it certainly is. Horse's do NOT have to be overweight to be insulin resistant. Being overweight is just another contributing factor.

Yes, in fact I use it on a horse that is actually a hard keeper but is IR . My experience with this product is that it prevents the Laminitis flare-ups. You would have to use it for a period of time and monitor the fatty pockets and cresty neck to see if any changes have occured.

Question

Is this product compatable to Equine Metabolic Support sold by Standard Process?

I am wondering if I can substitute SmartControl IR for this product since my pony is already on other Smartpaks.

Thanks for your question. SmartControl IR Pellets provide a similar level of support to Standard Process’ supplement. In fact they contain several of the same ingredients (cinnamon, chromium, and antioxidants). SmartControl IR’s formula offers a wider variety of ingredients, including herbs to help support healthy metabolic function. Plus, these tasty pellets are easy to feed with or without grain!

Hi,
I have had my horse, who is an easy keeping Friesian, on SP IR pellets for about 3 years. I took him off for about 3 months a year ago and things did not go well - his body shape changed and he got lethargic. He has not be tested for metabolic syndrome, but I did have a horse who was and Jules is close enough that I treat him like one. The primary active ingredient in the IR pellets is magnesium and chromium - there is a bunch of other stuff - check what SP has online. The product you are using has the chromium, but I do not see any magnesium. I suspect the key ingredient for metabolic control is the chromium, because that is also what Platinum Performance uses in their product as well. Based on my horse, it's probably OK to use the SP product, the reviews are great. But your vet is the best person to ask. Good luck. Jules does like the taste of the IR pellets too - that helps! Question

Is this product safe to feed to pregnant mares?

I have a mare that I'm pretty sure has IR, and I am planning on breeding her this year. Would this be safe for her during her pregnancy to help her control her weight and protect the baby?

Thanks!

Thanks for your question. Like most supplements, SmartControl IR has not specifically been evaluated for use in pregnant mares, therefore we recommend seeking your veterinarian’s advice before adding this supplement to your horse’s diet. Your vet will also be able to provide advice on dietary and management changes that may help control your mare’s weight and IR issues during pregnancy.

The label says that safe use for pregnant mares has not been proven... That is just a precaution, so it is really up to you... Personally I would research each individual ingredient to make sure it is ok first.

Thanks for your question. For SmartControl IR, we recommend 60 g (1 scoop) daily for maintenance, and 120 g (2 scoops daily) as a loading dose for horses needing higher levels of metabolic support. We advise that you speak with your veterinarian to determine which option would be best for your particular horse.

Question

Is there an ingrediant in Smart Control IR that can cause irritation?

I had my overweight pony with hypothyroidism on Smart Control IR in addition to thyroid medication and it worked, helped reduce fat pockets and helped her weight gain, but she started having some pink blotches show up aroung her lips and mouth. We were using the powder, before the pellets were available. We had to mix it with water and squirt it in her mouth and noticed that it made our hands itch. She is a Chestnut with only a white star and had no pink skin visible. I found another supplement that also worked and have had no issues with that one being irritating. Just wondering if Smart Pak knows what in this could be irritating, and if you have changed the formula at all. I am considering ordering supplements for my other old horse and would consider trying this again in pelleted form. Thanks.

We’re glad to hear SmartControl IR worked for your horse, you’ll be pleased to know it’s now available in pellets. We’re not sure why your particular horse experienced issues with it as we’ve not had any other reports like this. Hopefully he’ll eat this right out of your hand and be a happy, healthy horse!

Thanks for your question. If your veterinarian has diagnosed your pony with Insulin Resistance, we would recommend continuing to work with them or with an equine nutritionist to determine the best feeding program for your pony’s needs. We’ve included some links that have some helpful information about managing horses with Equine Metabolic Syndrome/Insulin Resistance below, and suggest discussing some of the management techniques with your veterinarian to see what will be the most appropriate for your pony.
