answer 1
Thanks for your question. We’re sorry to hear that you are still struggling with hoof issues. Tri-Amino provides three essential amino acids: lysine, methionine, and threonine. SmartMuscle Mass provides lower levels of those 3 amino acids, but contains additional amino acids and ingredients such as HMB to support muscle development. Pure Lysine, as the name suggests, contains only lysine. You may want to consider trying an alternate hoof supplement that provides more aggressive support. I would like to add that the biotin being supplemented in the hoof product cannot be utilized by the body without enough methionine. In my research, Uckele's Tri-Amino is the most economical source of methionine, and my go-to for any sort of amino acid supplementation. It should be perfectly acceptable to drop the Pure Lysine and SmartMuscle Mass in favor of the Tri-Amino.

The Tri-Amino would be an excellent replacement for Pure Lysine. This is because Tri-Amino contains not only Lysine but also Methionine and Threonine which is needed for muscle growth and if the horse does not have those other amino acids the chain is not complete for muscle growth. I took a look at the Muscle supplements at a glance chart. Here is how Tri Amino, Pure Lysine, and Smart Muscle mass, compare to each other:
SmartMuscle Mass:
Powder
$1.14 Per day
Aids in Muscle development √
HMB* (mg) 60
*HMB - Beta hydroxyl beta methyl butyrate
Lysine (mg) 96
Methionine (mg) 100
Threonine (mg) 90
L-Glutamine (mg) 1,400
Branched Chain Amino Acids √
Creatine (mg) 4,900
Gamma Oryzanol (mg) 220
Pure Lysine:
Powder
$0.43 Per day
Aids in muscle development √
Lysine (mg) 9,099
Tri-Amino
Powder
$0.50 Per day
Aids in muscle development √
Lysine (mg) 10,000
Methionine (mg) 5,000
Threonine (mg) 2,000
As you can see there are differences. But Tri-Amino actually contains more Lysine in it and also the other amino acids needed to complete the chain. Smart Muscle mass also contains them but in smaller quantities. Now Smart Muscle mass does contain other ingredients like: L-Glutamine, Branched Chain Amino Acids, Creatine, Gamma Oryzanol, and *HMB - Beta hydroxyl beta methyl butyrate. Your horse might or might not need those extra engredients in his diet. My suggestion is just to put him on Tri-Amino.
Speaking on hooves the chipping could be from a lack of Biotin. Biotin is needed for hoof, nail, and hair growth. In your supplement you are giving to him now which is Grand hoof contains 20 mg of Biotin. There are other supplements that contain more Biotin in it like: LinPro (224 mg) $1.62 per day Biotin Plus (50 mg) $1.11 per day, SmartHoof ultra $1.21 per day (30 mg), Nu-hoof Maximizer (30 mg) $0.86. These supplements contain more Biotin for hoof hardness and strength. Also talk to your farrier on trimming more often. The hoof might be getting long and he might be self trimming himself because his toes are too long.
Hope that helps! :)
